1893-1903 15th Earl of Derby and Lord Stanley
Stanley House was built by Edward Henry Stanley, the 15th Earl of Derby, and his son, Lord Stanley, in 1893, although the 15th Earl died on 21st April 1893. Prior to the building of the House the land had been owned by the formidable Caroline, Duchess of Montrose. During the period of development of the House the Earl also revived his stud interest at Knowsley, putting John Griffiths as his Stud Manager, while Halter Alston was given the task of managing the Stanley House Stud. The newly 'crowned' 16th Earl of Derby took a significant interest in horse racing, but he was also responsible for launching the Canadian Stanley Cup awarded to the top ice hockey team. He was Governor of Canada for a time, and in 1895 he took out a lease on Bedford Lodge which cost £1,850 per annum. Lord Derby employed George Lambton, aged just 33, as his personal trainer at Bedford Lodge, but at Christmas 1901 the lease expired after being held by the Earl of Derby for 6 years. In the meantime, the 16th Earl built and extended the Stanley House Stable block, which included a magnificent clock tower, particularly useful to ensure his stable hands kept good time.

1903-1926 George Lambton
The Honourable George Lambton, 5th son of the 2nd Earl of Durham, was born on 23rd December 1860 and educated at Winchester, Eton and Trinity College Cambridge. He hoped to have a career as a jockey, winning the 1888 Grand Steeplechase de Paris on Parasang, but he was badly injured in a steeplechase at Sandown Park in 1892. Within a year he had been appointed private trainer to the Earl of Derby, and during his time at Bedford Lodge he trained Canterbury Pilgrim (SR 1902) to win the 1896 Epsom Oaks. In 1903 George moved with the Earl to the newly built Stanley House Stables where he was extremely successful, winning the Trainer's Championship in 1906, 1911 and 1912. He also won 9 English Classics during his first spell at Stanley House, starting with the 1906 Epsom Oaks with Keystone II (SR 1927), followed by a 1910 St Leger victory with Swynford (SR 1978).

Stable fire early June 1906
Stanley House stables had one of the best equipped Fire Brigades in Newmarket, guarding the stables against potential fire, and in early June 1906 that Brigade was put to the test when a stable fire demolished a small stable block which housed Lord Derby's Keystone II (SR 1927), winner of the 1906 Epsom Oaks and Coronation Stakes. The horse was evacuated to another stable block without harm and the fire was quickly and efficiently extinguished. However, the Stanley House Fire Brigade was called to deal with a much more serious fire at Somerville Lodge Stables on Friday 23rd June 1906.

1926-1930 Frank Butters
Frank Butters, son of racehorse trainer Joe Butters, was born in Austria in 1878 where his father trained for a time, and Frank launched his own training career in Austria before the start of the First World War. Between 1914 and 1918 he was interned, but then moved to Italy to continue training. In 1926 he was enticed by the 17th Earl of Derby to move to England as private trainer at Stanley House, Newmarket where he enjoyed enormous success. In his 4 years at Stanley House he trained Beam (SR 1909) to win the 1927 Epsom Oaks, Toboggan (SR 1990) to win the 1928 Epsom Oaks, Fairway (SR 2125) to win the 1928 St Leger and Fair Isle (SR 1893) to win the 1930 1000 Guineas. However, as the 4 year lease came to an end, and after being crowned Champion Trainer in 1927 and 1928, Lord Derby decided that the economic climate was not right to continue in racing, leaving Frank to lease Fitzroy House and become a public trainer, training for the likes of HH Aga Khan, the 5th Earl of Durham, Prince Aly Khan, Sir Alfred Butt and Mr A W Gordon.

1931-1933 George Lambton
After Frank Butters left for Fitzroy House, George Lambton, who had acted as Racing Manager for Lord Derby, resumed his training duties which a much-reduced string, although that string did contain a real gem in the form of Hyperion. The colt won the Dewhurst Stakes and New Stakes as a two-year-old, although his odds of 6/1 and 100/7 respectively did not send out too many signals about what was to come in 1933. The colt won the Chester Vase at 15/8 on his 3-year-old debut before going on to record a resounding 4 length success over King Salmon in the Epsom Derby. Hyperion then won the Prince of Wales's Stakes when odds on, and justified being made 6/4 favourite to win the St Leger. Towards the end of the 1933 season George Lambton was finally replaced by Colledge Leader, although he had been a magnificent servant to the Earl's of Derby.

1st January 1934-1938 Colledge Leader
Colledge Leader was born in 1883 in Wroughton, Wiltshire, son of the racehorse trainer Thomas and his wife Rose Leader (nee Mathews). Colledge took over training duties at Machell Place from George Chaloner, listing Lord Harewood and J Bunny Leigh amongst his owners. Towards the end of the 1933 season he became private trainer to Lord Derby at Stanley House Stables, replacing George Lambton. He inherited the Classic winner Hyperion (SR 2248), although the horse did not perform as well for Colledge, but he did enjoy an extremely successful stud career. Colledge trained 2 Classic winners, 1935 Epsom Oaks Quashed (SR 1922) and 1936 1000 Guineas Tide-way (SR 1825) during his time at Stanley House, and also won 1936 Ascot Gold Cup with Quashed for Lord Stanley. Colledge died on 9th December 1938 at Fairway on the Bury Road, and was succeeded by Walter Earl in January 1939.

1939-1949 Walter Earl
Walter Earl began his training career in 1920, with Robert Sievier as one of his most high-profile owners. In 1924 Walter moved to Moulton Maddocks Stable as private trainer to Solly Joel, winning the 1925 Eclipse Stakes with Polyphontes, the 1928 Lincoln with Dark Warrior, the 1926 Goodwood Cup with Glommen and the 1926 Ebor and 1928 Doncaster Cup with Pons Asinorum. When Solly Joel died in 1931 Walter continued to train, but as a public trainer. In December 1938 he was appointed private trainer to Lord Derby, moving to Stanley House Stables on 1st January 1939 to take charge of 45 horses, gaining his first Classic success in the substitute Derby, run at Newmarket, with Watling Street (SR 2002). He gained further Classic successes in 1943 with Herringbone (SR 1988) in the 1000 Guineas and St Leger, in the 1944 2000 Guineas with Garden Path (SR 1908), and the 1945 1000 Guineas and Oaks with Sunstream (SR 2032). Arguably his best horse Alycidon did not win a classic, but did win the 1949 Ormonde Stakes, Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup. Walter collapsed at Newmarket races in April 1949 and again in July 1949, after which he underwent an operation for a brain tumour, but tragically he died in September 1950 from that brain tumour. Between April 1949 and his subsequent death in 1950 the stables were overseen by William Pratt, who had trained at his own small stables since 1940, and whose 3 daughters all married Newmarket trainers, J Watts, H Cottrill and C Halsey.

1950-November 55 George Colling, Humphrey Cottrill (assistant), Willie Pratt
George Scott Colling, son of racehorse trainer Bob Colling, was born at Habton, near Malton in Yorkshire and brought up surrounded by horses. His father was Master of Hounds, while his mother was the daughter of Robert L'Anson who had ridden Wild Monarch to win the 1879 Grand Steeplechase de Paris, and had contested 10 Grand Nationals, finishing second in 1872 when aboard Scarrington behind the Edward Brayley owned Casse Tete. George was apprentice to his father, along with his brother Jack, and in 1919 he rode 72 winners, but once weight became an issue in 1922 he decided to embark on a training career. He began to learn his trade whilst assisting brother Jack, who was based in Newmarket, and by 1935 was ready to apply for his licence. He trained at Hurworth House, but during the Second World War he was in the Royal Artillery, although after the War had ended he resumed his training career at Hurworth House where he famously guided Nimbus (SR 2012), bred by William Hill, to Classic succeses in the 1949 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby. In 1950 he was enticed to Stanley House Stables by Lord Derby, taking over from Walter Earl. During his spell at Stanley House he was assisted between 1950 and 1952 by Humphrey Cottrill, although in June 1952 Cottrill moved across to La Grange as private trainer to Major Lionel Holliday. The most successful horse George Colling was associated with during this period of his life was Wilwyn, who won the 1952 Rous Memorial Stakes and Great Yorkshire Stakes before being sent to USA, along with George's assistant Jack Waugh, to land the inaugural running of the Washington DC International Stakes. Wilwyn returned to England for the 1953 season, winning the Queen Anne's Plate, Limekiln Stakes and John Porter Stakes. George left Stanley House at the end of the 1955 season, returning to train at Hurworth House despite suffering from ill health, which was a constant worry for him, and he died on Saturday 18th April 1959.

November 1955-1963 J F (Jack) Watts
The Watts family have a long association with racing, John Watts rode 19 Classic winners from 1883 to 1897, his son J E Watts won two Classics, J F (Jack) Watts jnr trained the 1964 St Leger winner Indiana, while his son Bill Watts began training in Newmarket in 1968. J F (Jack) Watts, who began training in 1950 at St Albans House Stables, trained at Stanley House for Lord Derby after replacing the retired George Colling in November 1955, having trained at Wroughton House stables since 1951. In July 1955 Lord Derby expressed a wish to become a private stable once again, but George Colling felt that he owed a debt of gratitude to several owners with whom he had a long association, and declined Lord Derby's offer to continue training for him in the 1956 season. Therefore, Lord Derby invited J F 'Jack' Watts jnr to take charge at Stanley House, at the start of the 1956 season, with Doug Smith retaining his position as stable jockey. At the end of the 1963 season he left Stanley House, moving to Machell Place in 1964, training a stable of 50 horses. He retired from the training ranks in 1973 and died in Newmarket in February 1988 aged 76.

1964-1975 Bernard Van Cutsem
Bernard Henry Richard Harcourt Van Cutsem, born on 23rd January 1916, was the son of Henry Harcourt Van Cutsem and Eleanor Mary Josephine Southwell Trafford. Bernard was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, launching his training career at Beechwood House Stables, Exning in June 1938. He then took up the post of Second Lieutenant in the Life Guards during the Second World War. After the War he bred horses at Northmore Farm, Exning and trained at Stanley House Stables, training High Top (SR 2030) to win the 1972 2000 Guineas, Park Top to win the 1969 Coronation Cup and Hardwicke Stakes, Sharpen Up to win the 1971 Middle Park Stakes, and Karabas to win the 1970 Hardwicke Stakes. He was married, and divorced, twice and died on 8th December 1975 aged just 59.

In the mid-1960s six of the most prestigious, historical racing stables in Newmarket were honoured by having races named after them on the July course on the Saturday of the late August meeting. 1976-1989 Gavin Pritchard-Gordon
Gavin Pritchard-Gordon, born in October 1945, travelled to Newmarket in 1966 to join the Harvey Leader Shalfleet Stable before moving to Lambourn to become assistant trainer to Peter Walwyn. Having gained further experience with Walwyn he decided that he could broaden his experience still further by spending time with Stuart Murless at the Curragh. In 1972 Harvey Leader decided to retire, which provided Gavin with the perfect opportunity to apply for his own trainer's licence and take charge at Shalfleet. Within a year he had trained King Pele to win the 1973 Gloucester Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and to show his ability on both codes Gavin won the 1976 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot with Ardoon in the hands of Brian Taylor. In 1974 Oliver Sherwood began his racing career as pupil assistant to Gavin Pritchard Gordon. Arguably the best horse Gavin trained was Noalcoholic who won the 1982 Criterion Stakes, the Challenge Stakes and the Prix Messidor, while he also won the 1983 Lockinge Stakes and Sussex Stakes. He moved from Shalfleet to take charge at Stanley House Stables, but in 1989 he sold that establishment to the Maktoum family and, with the proceeds, he purchased Graham Place from Bill O'Gorman for a record amount for a training complex. At that time Graham Place stood in 1 3/4 acres of prime land close to the two racecourses and on the edge of the High Street, and boasted stabling for 54 horses. He retired from training in 1995, taking up a short-term post with the BHB, followed by a longer spell as Chief Executive of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

1989-1999 John Gosden
John Harry Martin Gosden OBE, son of racehorse trainer John 'Towser' Gosden, was born in Lewes, Sussex on 30th March 1951 and was educated at Eastbourne College before studying Economics at Emmanuel College Cambridge, where he met his future wife, Rachel Hood, who was studying Law. John, who was a keen, talented sportsman who gained blues in discus and javelin, joined the legendary trainer Vincent O'Brien as assistant trainer on leaving Cambridge, and then moved to assist Sir Noel Murless in Newmarket. He tasted Classic success under both of his mentors, each stable winning the Derby, Oaks and St Leger during his time with them. In order to gain further experience John moved to California, assisting trainer Tommy Doyle before taking out his own American Trainers License in 1979. A decade late John returned to Newmarket, training at Stanley House Stables. He won 2 English Classics during his time at Stanley House; in 1996 Shantou won the St Leger, while a year later Benny the Dip won the 1997 Epsom Derby At the end of the 1999 season John transferred to Manton Stables, Wiltshire, leaving David Loder to take over at Stanley House Stables.

1998-2000 David Loder
David Loder, born on 27th January 1964, began training in Newmarket in 1992, training for Sheikh Mohammed in 1998 and joining the Godolphin team in 1999 after John Gosden left for Manton. David was most famously in charge of a 2-year-old colt called Yaazer when he won a Yarmouth maiden in October 1998, suggesting to Sheikh Mohammed that the colt was the best of 60 young horses in the yard. This led to the Sheikh renaming the colt Dubai Millennium. The colt overwintered in Dubai with Saeed bin Suroor, returning to the Godolphin stables for his 3-year-old career, winning the 1999 Predominate Stakes at Goodwood and, on the back of that victory, was made a strong favourite for the 1999 Epsom Derby. However, he ran badly and was beaten 9 lengths in 9th place behind Oath (SR 1937). He recovered his form to win the 1999 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, while as a 4-year-old he won the Prince of Wales's Stakes and Dubai World Cup.

1995-present Saeed bin Suroor (Godolphin)
Saeed bin Suroor, born in Dubai on 16th November 1968, was working as a policeman and training a few racehorses in 1993 when his skills were spotted by Skeikh Mohammed and his team. He was appointed to oversee the Sheikh's Godolphin horses in 1995 and won the 1995 Epsom Derby that year with Lammtarra (SR 2080), going on to be crowned Champion British Flat racing trainer in 1996, and winning the title three more times, in 1998, 1999 and 2004. He is based at Al Quoz Stables, Dubai, for half the year, moving to Godolphin Stables in Newmarket between April and October. Up to the 2020 season he had trained the winner of 12 British Classics and 8 Dubai World Cup winners.
